What Does It Really Take to Build a Career in Strategy?
Consulting and corporate strategy are often seen as some of the most attractive career paths. But what really makes someone successful in strategy? Is it a top business school, a PhD or years of experience?
The answer may be much simpler. It is the ability to break down a complex problem into smaller, solvable parts. Whether you come from engineering, law, music or any other background, this is a skill you can build through everyday work. The important thing is to develop the habit of asking how a problem can be understood and solved at the right level.
There is another skill that is equally important and often overlooked. Listening. When you are the youngest person in a room full of experienced business leaders, your job is not to prove that you know more than them. Your job is to understand the real problem. Senior leaders often know the business better than anyone else. Good strategy comes from listening carefully, asking the right questions and getting to the issue beneath the obvious question.
The role of a strategist is also changing with AI. AI can now help with research, data and finding patterns. But the responsibility for understanding the answer and making the final decision still rests with people. Strong subject knowledge, critical thinking and the ability to communicate with people remain important. The future may not replace the strategist. It may simply give the strategist better tools to work with.
And then there is one simple mindset that can make a difference throughout a career: Why not? Why not try something outside your comfort zone? Why not learn something new? Industries will change, technology will change and careers will change. The willingness to learn, adapt and take on something new can help you keep moving forward.
